In the Era of Bad News...

Thank you for being a reason to still keep living, though I don't even know what for.

The world is a terrible place to be an ordinary person in. Another tragedy, another injustice, another reminder that people can lose everything while those responsible carry on with their lives. And somehow, we're expected to wake up, go to work, pay our bills, and pretend everything is normal.

It's hard to dream when the future feels this uncertain. What am I supposed to look forward to? A stable job, a comfortable life, a little peace of mind? Even these feel like privileges sometimes. The world is unfair, hard work doesn't guarantee anything, and being a good person doesn't mean you'll be treated well. There is so much suffering beyond our control, and I don't know how to keep caring without feeling overwhelmed by it all.

Sometimes I wonder what the point of it is. What am I doing with my life? If I were to leave this world today, have I done enough? Have I been useful to anyone, made anything better, or left something good behind? I keep thinking about how much there is to fix and how little one person can do. It's a terribly exhausting way to live, feeling like whatever I do will never be enough.

But then there are people.

People who make an ordinary Tuesday worth getting through. Friends who send something stupid just to make me laugh. Someone who listens when my head is a mess, remembers the little things, or gives me something to look forward to when the days feel indistinguishable from one another. Kind strangers who make the world feel a little less cold, without ever knowing they did.

As Gandalf once said, "I've found it is the small things, everyday deeds of ordinary folk that keeps the darkness at bay."

I don't know if these little things can make the world any less cruel. They certainly won't undo its injustices. But they make living in it a little easier, and perhaps that's worth something.

So, thank you. For the conversations, the laughter, the messages I look forward to reading in the morning, the gifts, the kindness, and the patience you show me when I can't seem to make sense of my own thoughts. Thank you for being here, in whatever capacity you are in my life. You might never realise how much a small gesture means to someone who's struggling to find reasons to look forward to another day.

I'm still pessimistic about the future. I don't know what to dream about, and I have no grand faith that things will get better. But there are still messages I haven't read, people I haven't met, places I haven't seen, and ordinary Tuesdays I haven't lived through yet.

Maybe I haven't done enough with my life. Maybe I never will. I don't know how to measure the worth of a life when there is always so much left undone.

But I'm glad our paths crossed in this ephemeral life. I'm glad I got to know you, to laugh with you, and to be on the receiving end of your kindness.

And if you've ever given me a reason to stay a little longer, even without knowing it, thank you.

The world is still a difficult place to believe in. I'm just glad there are people like you in it.
